Christmas Traditions

Christmas is a very special holiday, because we’re not only celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, but we’re manifesting our gratitude to those who deserve it the most: our loved ones. Who wouldn’t be excited about the beautiful decoration, the delicious meals and the meaningful gifts we provide and recieve? If you’re still not in your yearly Christmas mood, our list of the five best things about expecting Santa will definitely give you a hint.

The Nativity Scene.

The story of Jesus Christ’s birth is a tale everyone knows by heart. The animals gathered around the newborn to keep him warm in the cold winter weather, since his parents couldn’t find a warmer place to stay for the night. We commemarate this beautiful event by visiting outdoors handbuilt navity scenes or even keep a small one in our home. The important thig is that we think about and understand the origin of the holiday we’re celebrating.

Christmas Stockings.

This tradition is quite similar to the one we have here in Hungary, the difference is that we place our boots in the window on the 6th of December, while other nations do it on Christmas Eve. US children are hanging their christmas stockings somewhere in the house, so when Santa arrives, he can leave small toys, candy or other goods to those kids, who behaved during the year. Naughty kids usually receive a coal. This event is based on the story of three sisters who unfortunately were very poor, but one winter evening, Saint Nicholas left some coins in the girls’s stockings.

Leaving Milk And Cookies For Santa.

We all know that Santa is working very hard to deliver all the presents in time, so it’s our responsibility to provide him some snacks and a drink before he leaves on his sleigh with his reindeers. Children all around the world would wake up in excitement to check the plate they’d put out last night. If the cookies are gone, there’s a good chance that a gift is waiting for you to discover in your stockings.

Decorating The Christmas Tree.

Christmas wouldn’t be the same without the tree full of cozy lights and ornaments. Decorating may seem a lot of work, but it definetely has a fun side which the whole family can share. It is not only beautiful, but magical too, this is the other place where you can find your presents after Santa’s visit. Have you ever tought about why we bring these full grown pines in our homes? Well, it has a biblical origin too! The triangular shape of the evergreen represents the holy trinity: the father, the son and the holy ghost.

Singing Christmas Carols.

Since our school is based on music, I tought this topic would fit perfectly as the last tradition. During the holiday season, choirs often choose to sing these melodies to remember the birth of Christ. Caroling from house to house unfortunately is not the most popular tradition nowadays, but giving a concert in Mathias Church sure is. J

Now all you have to do is grab a blanket, listen to some christmas songs or watch one of the christmas classics and enjoy the vibes of this magical holiday.
